Visit Fort Lauderdale: To Partake, Play and Buy Property!

In 2007, my husband and I decided to leave NY and make Florida our home. Our first son had just turned one, and we wanted him to grow up experiencing a more relaxed life, different from the hustle and bustle we grew to know. What helped us in making that decision was the opportunity to live in one of my mother's vacant condos in Fort Lauderdale, which allowed us to experience Florida as residents. It gave us a chance to decide where we'd like to live long term, while enjoying all the amenities we desired.
If you're considering a move to FL and leaving a lively city like NY, I would recommend starting the transition in Fort Lauderdale. Especially if you want the lifestyle, minus the snow. To view available properties, visit Redfin for Fort Lauderdale Real Estate.
You know the saying, "We live where you vacation!"? Well, it's true. You're just a drive away from the fun and excitement people travel here to see. Whether it's the beaches, airboat tours, excursions, nightlife, sports, concerts, etc., it's all available, and deal seekers have quite a selection to choose from.
Being someone who previous thought I'd never want to leave New York, I was under the illusion of thinking Florida was only for retirees. But, if you look you can always find things to do, fun things that people in there 20s liked to do too! Seriously, aside from the Palm Trees and people looking into your eyes and greeting you, the move wasn't as big of a shock to my system as I thought it would be.
We've learned how affordable life in Fort Lauderdale could be, especially to someone coming from a state like New York where a dollar doesn't stretch as far. Food prices were less, apartments, even homes cost less, and if you're in the right field, salaries were just as competitive.
Comparing it to other states and to its neighbor, Miami, you can still get a decent amount of space affordably. Check out some of the Fort Lauderdale condos for sale, or houses if you need more room.
For my readers from up north, one thing you'd know for sure is the food is on another level. Coming from a West Indian and Hispanic family, being able to find restaurants that sold food that agreed with my taste buds was as important as feeling comfortable in my new home. It can be found in Fort Lauderdale.
No matter who you are, or where you're from, if you like West Indian food, my picks are:
- Joy's Roti Delight in Lauderhill, FL. The best Roti, and Phoulorie I've found so far. Not in the best location and sometimes the wait can be unbearable, but the food is well worth it.
- The Dutch Pot Jamaican Restaurant in Tamarac, FL. They haven't failed me yet when it comes to the juiciest, most flavorful oxtails, or stew chicken. But, like Joy's Roti Delight, the wait can be frustrating, so don't plan on visiting the restaurant during your lunch break.
- Aruba Beach Cafe in Lauderdale by the Sea, FL. Beautiful location, delicious "Americanized" Caribbean food. Right on the beach. Step outside and there's sand. I visited with a group and for a restaurant that was pretty full, they handle it well. We were quickly seated, and food came out in a timely fashion.
Make sure you try their Conch Fritters and Bimini Bread with Aruba Glaze.
When it comes to American food and desserts, my picks are:
- ROK BRGR in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Their Chicken and Waffles meal is amazing. The presentation is instagram worthy and it tastes as good as it looks. If you're looking to indulge and have a day off from counting calories, it is a must try!
